English

Multi-faceted and meaningful.
The overall objective of the five-year English Language Arts program is, first, to develop the student’s fluency in and appreciation for various media and texts; and second, to cultivate her/his ability to communicate ideas as effectively as possible.

Through the critical study of the novel, short story, poetry, and drama, students are encouraged to become avid and discriminating readers. They are asked to respond to literature, to reflect upon and critique the content, message, and literary value of the texts they read. The curriculum includes a blend of contemporary and classic titles. Students also learn that conscientious reading is a vital ingredient in the development of conscientious writing.

Oral communication skills are developed in English Language Arts through class discussion, debate, performance, public speaking, and individual and group presentations.
