Student Life at Herzliah

The high school experience at Herzliah is a multifaceted journey that extends well beyond the classroom walls. We recognize that meaningful learning and character development often occur in environments where students can explore their interests, develop new skills, and connect with others outside the academic framework. Thus, student life at Herzliah is designed to be a comprehensive experience that balances academics with opportunities for personal growth, leadership, and service, preparing our students to become well-rounded individuals ready to take on the challenges of the future.

Athletics

Our comprehensive athletics program provides plenty of opportunity to compete, stay in shape, win impressive trophies and share in some infectious team spirit.

Athletics is about developing as a whole human being, as a member of a team, and as a learner who is coachable, committed and willing to challenge himself (or herself)and who is ready and willing to take risks. Participation in athletics provides opportunities outside of the classroom for natural leaders to expand their skills and for developing leaders to gain confidence.

Herzliah proudly offers a broad range of team sports, both intra and inter mural and athletic programs which are well attended by the students. In most of our sports, we compete locally as a member of theGreater Montreal Athletic Association (GMAA)and Jewish Interscholastic Sports Association. At varying levels, our teams participate as members of an independent school league and as part of the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ).

Through our sports program we teach our students the skills and discipline so important to success as they move forward in their educational journey and beyond.Tenacity, grit, perseverance and a growth mindset are just some of the qualities that Herzliah aspires to instill in its students. The athletics program provides an anchor for our students in terms of values, ethical framing and community building.

Leadership Development

At Herzliah, we believe that leadership skills are cultivated through experience, responsibility, and service to others. The Student Life and Madrichim Program provides a platform for students to develop these essential skills by taking on leadership roles within the school community. Whether it’s coordinating school-wide events, mentoring younger students, or organizing significant school traditions like Ruach Assemblies, Winter Carnival, and spirit days, participants gain practical experience that prepares them for future leadership roles. Through these activities, students learn to work as a team, take initiative, and lead with integrity, making them not just leaders within the school but also in the wider community.

Clubs & Activities

Herzliah offers a rich and diverse array of co-curricular and extracurricular opportunities, ensuring that students across all grade levels can find activities that resonate with their passions. Our school buzzes with energy as students engage in a wide variety of clubs, activities, trips, and special programs. Whether your interests lie in journalism, environmental stewardship, leadership, music, or literature, there is something at Herzliah to spark your enthusiasm. For those passionate about sustainability, our Environment Club plays a crucial role in maintaining our rooftop greenhouse, providing hands-on experience in eco-friendly practices and urban agriculture. You might also find yourself contributing to the student newspaper, shaping school policy in student government, celebrating Jewish identity with the Lions of Zion, showcasing your dance and musical talents in the school’s Variety Show, or competing in the Battle of the Books. Our inclusive and supportive environment not only encourages students to join existing clubs but also to take the initiative in creating new ones. This vibrant, fun, and safe atmosphere helps students build self-esteem, foster creativity, and develop confidence, all while pursuing their unique interests.

Community Service

A strong commitment to community service is a fundamental value at Herzliah, reflecting our dedication to the principle of Tikkun Olam, or repairing the world. Our community service program offers students numerous opportunities to engage in meaningful volunteer work throughout their time at the school. These experiences allow students to connect with the broader Montreal community, providing assistance to those in need and learning about the impact of their actions. Whether through organized school projects or individual initiatives, students discover the profound importance of giving back. They learn that their contributions, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in the lives of others and help create a better world. This commitment to service not only strengthens the students' connection to their community but also instills in them a lifelong sense of responsibility and empathy.

Physics Competition

Herzliah students regularly participate in renowned physics competitions, which challenge them to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems. One of the highlights is our annual participation in the Physics Competition hosted by the Weizmann Institute of Israel, a prestigious event where students engage with peers from across the globe to test their scientific skills. These competitions foster a deep understanding of physics and promote critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. With the guidance of our dedicated faculty, students prepare rigorously, building confidence and enhancing their passion for the sciences. This experience prepares them not only for future academic challenges but also for careers in STEM fields.

Math Competitions

In addition to physics, Herzliah students participate in several prestigious mathematics competitions. Notable among these are the Cayley and Fermat Competitions, organized by the University of Waterloo, which allow students to engage with challenging mathematical concepts and showcase their problem-solving skills. These competitions provide students with an excellent platform to sharpen their analytical thinking and compete on a national and international level. Herzliah students consistently perform well in these competitions, reflecting the strong foundation in mathematics provided by our school’s curriculum.

Variety Show | Play

One of the highlights of the school year is the Herzliah Variety Show, a vibrant student-led event showcasing the incredible range of talent in our school. Students take center stage with performances that include dance, comedy sketches, music, and theatrical pieces. This event fosters creativity, self-expression, and teamwork, giving students the opportunity to shine in front of their peers, teachers, and families. The Variety Show is not only a celebration of talent but also a demonstration of the unity and spirit that defines the Herzliah community.
